NAME: The Spy (real name unknown)
CANON: Team Fortress 2
CANON POINT: Just after Team Fortress #6: The Naked and the Dead
AGE: Unknown. Somewhere between 50s-60s.
BACKGROUND: Spy's history is unknown to everyone but him, and his lips are sealed. The only things known about his past is that he hails from an indeterminate region of France, he took a detour to Boston when he was "young" and got a local woman pregnant with her eighth child before running away, and he has quite expensive tastes.
Spy joined Reliable Excavation and Demolition as a mercenary in 1968 along with eight other individuals. This company, RED for short, was a front for an intelligence agency. This is where things get a little screw-y so here's a rough timeline of the Team Fortress continuity. The important things regarding Spy follow as such:
In early 1972, the team was disbanded. Spy was ready to board a private jet and disappear when Scout stopped him, saying he needed to get his life savings from the local bank. Spy originally refused, but when Scout mentioned that losing the money would devastate his mother, Spy agreed to take him to Teufort. They were immediately trapped inside of the vault and arrested.
They were in jail for six months before their hearing where, despite their teammates' efforts, they were sentenced to death by hanging. Thank to the work of Miss Pauling, they were released and free to help her gather the last cache of Australium (a valuable super-element) for the Administrator. Spy accompanied Miss Pauling to Australia to track down the Sniper, then was tasked with 'accompanying' (read: babysitting) Soldier and his new fiancee, Zhanna, to acquire a submarine to reach the long-lost underwater country of New Zealand.
The last of the Australium was used to paint a spaceship that was then launched into space, meaning the mission was a wash. To make things worse, the team was captured by another set of mercenaries and held prisoner. Spy offered to share a cyanide capsule with Miss Pauling to ensure they wouldn't divulge any information to the enemy team, but were interrupted by the enemy spy before either of them could swallow it. They managed to escape thanks to Soldier and Zhanna, and Spy separated from the rest of the group.
He met up with Sniper and teamed up to try and take out the enemy sniper. However, the enemy sniper saw through the ruse and shot Spy in the left leg. Spy was saved by his team's Sniper, and they wandered through the base until they found Scout, who had been fatally injured. Spy disguised himself as Tom Jones, whom Scout idolized, to tell Scout that he was his father and that he was proud of him before Scout seemingly died in his arms. However, Scout was revived seconds later, and accompanied them to meet with the rest of the team.
They defeated the enemy heavy, seemingly winning the battle, and Spy congratulated Miss Pauling on successfully giving a Reason You Suck speech to a dying man.
PERSONALITY: Spy is a very successful assassin, and part of being a successful assassin is being emotionally detached. He is a professional in almost every sense of the word: cold and calculating with no sense of remorse. Strangely enough, this makes him a pretty good, if not severe, teacher: he's not above teaching a six year old how to stab a man in the jugular and he successfully taught Miss Pauling how to play piano in minutes by administering electroshock therapy.
He is a confirmed, well-seasoned womanizer with a practiced expertise in seduction, but don't let the professional demeanor fool you. Spy's favorite pastime is telling people how stupid they are. He sincerely believes that he's better than everyone else in the room and insults everyone. Granted, this turns into more playful teasing if he actually likes someone, but his insults can vary. One moment will be a witty pun and the other will be making fun of someone for being a virgin.
He is also a very spiteful person. There's nothing he hates more than being outwitted or tricked, and if someone messes with him, he'll wait patiently for the best opportunity to get revenge and will relish in it. However, he can maintain his professional demeanor when it matters, such as keeping someone's attention so a teammate can get in position to take them out. Although he easily gets angry if he or his material possessions are damaged or dirtied (he cries when you throw Jarate at him, but given that Jarate is just pee in a jar, that makes sense), he's unflappable in a crisis.
Overall, the most important thing about Spy is that he is a coward. Being able to use a cloaking device helps with his tendency to favor flight over fight, and he'll often use his watch to turn invisible and run away if he thinks he's about to enter a fight he can't win. But this also extends to his personal life as well. He admits to having had run away from the responsibility of being a father to Scout, and even has to disguise himself as someone else in order to do that. Even the way he kills people tends to be non-confrontational in that he prefers to stab them in the back, although he is capable of strangling a man to death with ankle-cuffs.
He also may have a heart of gold hidden somewhere under all that intrigue. After he teaches a child how to kill someone and save countless lives, Spy comforts him and even lets him ride on his shoulders. He encourages and even comforts Miss Pauling, offering to share a cyanide pill with her so that neither of them suffer interrogation. And he does actually make an effort to tell Scout, who Spy infamously doesn't agree with most of the time, that he's proud of him.
He's mostly just an asshole, though.
POWERS/ABILITIES: Spy is actually pretty unremarkable by himself. Most of his skills come from his tools and weaponry. However, with age comes experience, and he is very experienced.
Stealth: Granted, he can turn invisible with his cloaking device, but even without it, he knows how to stay quiet and stay unnoticed.
Combat: Spy knows how to use weapons, specifically revolvers and knives. He tends to show off with his butterfly knife, but he's also capable of stabbing people in the back with it.
INVENTORY:
- Clothes (custom-made red and white pinstriped suit and tie, black shoes, black leather gloves, and a red balaclava/ski mask)
- Butterfly knife
- Revolver
- Digital cloaking device disguised as a watch
- Photograph of Scout's mother
MOONBLESSING: Cordis.
